Have you ever had a sprain?

Treat Your Ankle Sprain, Even If You Feel No Pain | Michigan Rolfing

When you step on something wrong and your ankle starts to roll, there is a set of reactions by the body trying to correct your balance. Muscles on the side of your leg shorten to try to pull your foot back in line, but if you have rolled too far and they can’t correct your position, this shortening will instead pull your fibula down. This is an ankle sprain: the muscles have been pulled past their limit and strained.

With your fibula pulled down, you will be doing some limping around…

Soon the joint loosens up enough to allow you to walk normally without much pain. But, your body has no way to correct this imbalance fully, and your foot, ankle and leg bones are still locked in that shifted position; they haven’t moved back. Instead, your body has redistributed or rebalanced your weight to make walking comfortable and functional again.

This often means that you’re standing on your outside arch, on the side where the tight muscles are. If you stay that way, you can easily sprain your ankle further, or your body will adapt by walking on your lateral arch causing you to lose some mobility in your other arches. This will put strain on the foot, and eventually, it will cause pain. Walking around on out-of-place bones with muscles in distress can put other areas of your body under strain, as well. Let’s treat those minor ankle sprains right away, shall we?
